To all Roatan travelers with destination to the United States or connection via the US to any part of the world, please be mindful of the new TSA regulations. Per the announcement of various International Airlines, as of June 30th 2018 they will be restricting the transportation of items such as makeup/cosmetics or other powdered substances above 12 oz./ 340 gr/ 350 ml in carry-on baggage.
What other products fall under that category? These include but not limited to baby powder, coffee, sugar, spices, and protein mixes. If you are unclear of what constitutes powder, then the American Airline website offers a clarification: “Powder-like substances are described as fine dry particles produced by the grinding, crushing or disintegration of a solid substance.”
What are the exemptions to this secondary screening rule? Exempt are: baby formula, substances with medical prescription, and cremated human remains.
Note that the restricted items won’t necessarily be confiscated. The passenger will be asked to remove the powder for additional screening, the same as with liquids – or rather say, as should be done with liquids. If the aviation security official cannot clear the item, then you will be asked to either discard the substance or check it. In order to avoid any delays or reduce the chance of having to toss your products above 12 ounces, it’s best to place them in your checked baggage prior to arriving at the security check point.
The American Airline’s website also clarified that this new policy does not apply to flights departing from the United States or US territories, as other procedures are in place.
You may be wondering, why the new rule? Well, it is due in part because of the plot to blow up an Etihad Airways plane in Australia that occurred in July of last year. Since then, there has been a more rigorous focus on powder, even though it has always been on the TSA’s radar.
And yes, the transportation of gun powder remains prohibited from all carry-on and checked baggage.
